Laser Hair Removal 101: What to Expect
Everything you need to know before your first appointment at the best laser center on the North Shore.
If you're searching for the best laser hair removal near me, you've probably got questions — does it hurt, how many sessions will you need, and what should you actually do to prepare? As one of the North Shore's most awarded laser and skincare centers, we walk clients through this exact conversation every day. Here's the complete rundown.
How Laser Hair Removal Works
Laser hair removal uses concentrated light energy that's absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in each hair follicle. That energy converts to heat, which damages the follicle enough to slow or stop future hair growth. Because lasers target hair in its active growth phase, and not every follicle is in that phase at the same time, it takes a series of sessions spaced several weeks apart to catch the majority of hair in your treatment area.
Before Your Appointment
- Shave, don't wax or pluck. The laser needs a hair root beneath the skin to target — waxing, tweezing, or threading removes that root and makes the treatment far less effective.
- Avoid sun exposure and self-tanner. Tanned or sunburned skin increases the risk of side effects and can make treatment less safe. Use SPF on treatment areas in the weeks leading up to your session.
- Skip retinoids and exfoliating acids on the treatment area for a few days beforehand, as they can make skin more sensitive.
- Book a consultation first. Every skin type and hair type responds differently, which is why we start every new client with a consultation to build a treatment plan around your goals.
During Your Treatment
Most clients describe the sensation as a quick warm snap, similar to a rubber band flick, that fades almost immediately. Session length depends entirely on the size of the area — a lip or underarm treatment might take just a few minutes, while a full-leg treatment takes longer. Your provider will use a handpiece to pass the laser over your skin in the treatment area, and most clients are in and out of the office quickly.
After Your Session
It's normal for the treatment area to look and feel a bit like a mild sunburn for a day or two — some redness and slight puffiness around each follicle is expected and typically fades quickly. Over the following one to three weeks, treated hairs will shed naturally, which can look like the hair is "still growing" even though the follicle has been treated. Keep the area moisturized, avoid direct sun, and use SPF between sessions.
How Many Sessions Will You Need?
Because hair grows in cycles, no single session catches every follicle. Most clients need a series of sessions spaced four to eight weeks apart to see significant, lasting reduction, with maintenance sessions from time to time after that. Your provider will map out a realistic timeline for your specific hair type, skin tone, and treatment area during your consultation.
